Introduction to Drupal LMS

Training platforms that serve millions run on a Drupal module most developers have never heard of. Learning management systems (LMS) are necessary for organizations that deliver continuing education, employee onboarding, compliance training, or member education. Many assume they have to rent one from commercial vendors like Blackboard, Brightspace, Canvas, or Docebo, which typically price by the number of learners. You don't have to rent. You can own your LMS.

Drupal LMS is a module and an ecosystem that enables you to deliver courses (lessons, activities, assessments, and completion certificates) using the CMS you already know. It makes it easy to create courses natively in Drupal while supporting industry standards including H5P, SCORM, and xAPI. Drupal LMS pairs nicely with e-learning authoring tools like Articulate 360. And since it's Drupal, you can integrate it with your existing systems.

The Drupal LMS project began as a fork of Opigno, the long-running LMS distribution, before it was fully rearchitected and released to the community by Tag1 in April 2025. Drupal LMS is open source, so costs grow with your infrastructure, not the number of learners. That's critical for large-scale membership organizations like the AFL-CIO and the American Federation of Teachers, and for national training organizations like the Battered Women's Justice Project. Other agencies and organizations are building on Drupal LMS and extending it.

This session includes a live demo. We'll install Drupal LMS with a Drupal recipe, create a course with lessons and a variety of activities, and look under the hood at how scoring and progress tracking work. You'll also see how developers can extend Drupal LMS with custom activity types.

Bring your hardest questions, and leave knowing whether Drupal LMS can replace the LMS your organization is renting today.
