The Future of Drupal in Just Five Words
John Money
Ask developers for the first three words they associate with Drupal and you get a lovely picture of its legacy: open source, flexible, reliable, secure. Across 1,167 words volunteered by the 389 developers who knew Drupal, just five mentioned AI. The problem is not what developers dislike about Drupal. It is that what Drupal is best at has gone invisible.
That comes from independent research commissioned by Acquia across 575 web developers in the US, UK, and France this summer. The same survey found that a platform being a poor fit for AI or agentic workflows is now the single biggest reason developers would leave it, ahead of cost, developer experience, and hiring. Half of them named structuring content so agents can reliably find and act on it as a top priority.
So the gap is not cosmetic, and this is not a branding talk. It walks through four requirements a content management system must meet before it can be considered an agentic content platform. And we grade Drupal honestly against each. Closing that last gap should be priorities one, two, and three for anyone invested in Drupal's future.
Takeaways:
- What 575 developers say drives them toward and away from a platform
- Four requirements for Drupal to be viewed as the de facto standard agentic content platform
- The perception gap, why it tracks a real capability gap, and how to help close both
