Critical Skills for the Modern Drupal Project Manager

In this course, we will review the core responsibilities of a PM and some of the tools available to help you better manage them. We will also discuss some communication tools and techniques to help you have the difficult conversations with your clients. In the afternoon, we will focus more on learning the basic toolkit of a Drupal developer to help familiarize with how these tools work and better equip you to understand what your team does on a daily basis. You may even feel empowered to jump in and help out with some of the small stuff.

This training is intended for digital project managers that are looking to sharpen their skills and deepen their understanding of the tools used by the developers they work with on a day-to-day basis. This course is also geared towards freelance developers who would like to improve their ability to organize and manage projects and tackle the tough conversations with clients.

Core Responsibilities of a PM

In this section we will cover the core responsibilities of a PM and some common dos and don’ts to be being successful:

  • Managing the Scope
  • Managing the Budget
  • Managing the Timeline

Dealing with Challenging Situations

Having that tough conversation about budget or scope creep can be intimidating for some. In this part of the workshop we will do some role playing where we work through common challenging conversations. Then as a group we will analyze how we did and what we could have done better.

How Technical Should a Drupal PM Be

Being a Project Manager on a Drupal project does not require that you know how to program. But it helps if you can speak their language. In this section of the workshop we’re going to do some hands on work with some of the tools that your engineers use on a day-to-day basis. In this part of the workshop we will:

  • Learn the basics of working with Git
  • Set up a local version of a Drupal site using DrupalVM
  • Build a simple website that includes
    • Creating content types
    • Creating taxonomies
    • Build a views page
  • Learn how to export Drupal config and commit it to your GitHub repository
